Overview

Meghalaya—literally the “abode of clouds”—sits tucked away in India’s northeast, bordered by Assam and Bangladesh. It’s famous for its lush landscapes, dramatic waterfalls, and living root bridges that are found nowhere else in the world. Travelers are drawn to its clean villages, mysterious caves, and the sheer variety of scenery that shifts from canyons to rivers to rainforest-like hills.

A Meghalaya backpacking trip is perfect for those who crave nature’s drama without giving up on accessibility—Guwahati in Assam is your gateway, with easy rail and air connectivity from major cities. From there, a scenic drive brings you to the heart of Meghalaya, where every turn opens up new vistas and stories. When planning your trip, it helps to know that Meghalaya’s weather can be unpredictable—so pack light but smart. While Wi-Fi won't follow you everywhere, you’ll find basic mobile connectivity in most places, enough to stay in touch but still truly disconnect. A Meghalaya backpacking trip works best for travelers who are open to a mix of adventure and immersive local moments.
